How to build Merbau decking?

Hi,

I would like to build a deck with merbau. What is the best way to attach the decking? I was wondering could you route the edge of the decking and fix with eco deck attachments for a more seamless look. Will this affect the wood with aging?

Re: merbau decking

Hello @lgamac

Thanks for sharing your question about the possibility of attaching your decking panels with the Quickfix for Ekodeck 3mm 100lm Kit - Timber Joists. It is possible to route a channel on the decking panel in order to use the Ekodeck quick fix system, but it will be difficult to predict what the long-term effects will be and if it will hold the panels properly. The fixing kit is designed to work with the Ekodeck panels which are made of composite material. They will not shrink, rot or deteriorate when compared to timber decking panels.

Timber decking on the other hand will be subject to those things I've just mentioned. It is those changes to the decking material that will make the use of the quick fix not ideal. If you truly would like to have your deck have hidden fixings, I suggest upgrading your panels to the Ekodeck panels. Otherwise, if you stay with the timber decking panels, I suggest using standard fixings such as the   Titan 10G x 50mm Wide Head Decking Screw 304 Stainless Steel - Pack of 500.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Jewelleryrescue for their recommendations.

Re: merbau decking

Good Evening @lgamac

Now that is an interesting idea, Not one that I would be game to try but if you do I would be definently follow along  When I have installed merbau and other timbers for screens ect very few have been perfectly straight. I have used ratchets to help place the boards in a straight manor before screwing them in. Trying to route exactly these boards I think would be problematic. There are other hidden ways to attach decking tho cannot think of their names atm
