Hi @TraceyO,
Thank you for your post.
Are you looking for information on the expected life span of treated pine sleepers used to create garden beds?
CCA-treated pine sleepers, which is what you have in your photos, can last between 15 to 25 years in a garden bed application, though several factors affect their longevity. CCA (chromated copper arsenate) treatment protects the wood from rot, insects, and fungi by infusing preservative chemicals into the timber. However, exposure to soil moisture and natural elements still gradually breaks down the wood over time.
Factors that influence the lifespan include:
In a well-drained, moderate climate, CCA-treated pine sleepers can lean toward the higher end of the lifespan estimate (around 20-25 years)
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Hi Jacob,
That is great to know. Thank you!
Hi Jacob,
just clarifying my sleepers are NOT CCA treated - that’s unsafe for vegetable garden beds due to the arsenic. These are Tanolith-E treated sleepers from Bunnings. Can you please confirm that they have a similar life span? 😊
Hi @TraceyO,
Tanolith-E treated sleepers typically should last around 15-20 years, depending on conditions. Good drainage and reduced moisture exposure can help extend their lifespan.
