Hi all.
I'm looking for advice on painting external timber. We have decided to paint the balustrade and railings on our stairs leading to the backyard into a dark colour.
I'm not sure what paint would work well and the necessary preparations (as few a possibly preferred) if required. We recently painted a fence with the product below which turned out well. Also not sure if the same paint would work.
Personally, I'd use Dulux Weathershield in your desired colour @diy_hausdesigns. Monument is quite popular for a dark grey finish, otherwise Domino is one of my favs which is a sophisticated black.
My understanding is that fence paint is best for fences which are exposed to the elements but don't have hands/feet/shoes rubbing on them as it doesn't have a high wear/abrasion resistance. So in this case I don't think it'd be the best product. But I'm no paint specialist.
Thanks @ProjectPete
You've led me down the right path. I had a look at the specs and all for the Dulux. Sounds like exactly what I need.

Hi @diy_hausdesigns,
I just thought I'd jump in to confirm what @ProjectPete was saying. He is spot on with his recommendation. The Walpamur fence paint is great for large areas of fencing, but I would not recommend it for bannisters or the timberwork you have pictured.
I also agree that you can't really go wrong with Domino or Monument as colours. You might like to try a sample pot to make sure it suits your own tastes.

Thank you once again @MitchellMc !
I settled on Woodland Grey. Our new fence is Monument so having the two will hopefully give some depth and dimension to the back yard.
Cheers again !
That sounds like a great choice!
I trust the community will be interested to see the results. Are you planning on painting this weekend? How's the weather?

Hi @MitchellMc and @ProjectPete
Thanks for the advice regarding exterior timber painting. As mentioned, I went with Dulux Weathershield in monument grey

Turned out great @diy_hausdesigns - nice one!
The plants/flowers really pop against the dark backdrop.
