What can I do about the smell from this open drain?

Hi Bunnings community,

Thank you in advance for being so helpful!

I have a drainage point just outside my kitchen area underneath a pergola that permeates a small, particularly in the hotter months of the year. This odour is likely caused by food/oils etc that get drained from our kitchen sink.

What are my options if I want to eliminate the source of the odour?

Is covering the drainage point permanently my only viable option in this scenario?

Thank you again for any suggestions!

Re: What can I do about the smell from this open drain?

Hi @Jhur,

Thank you for your question.

Do you have a copy of your building plans? It could help us identify what the purpose of this drainage point is.

Your wastewater pipes should not be connected to a vent on ground level, so I would be surprised if the cause of the smell is the build-up of oils and food from your sink.

I would expect it is more likely that there are rotting leaves or material in the pipe that are causing the smell, but if you suspect that your sewage pipe is incorrectly venting into an outdoor area, it’s best to consult a licensed plumber to assess compliance and recommend a proper solution.

You could try using a drain cleaning chemical such as this Drain Clean Liquid Enzyme Drain Cleaner, but if that does not work, you'll have to speak with a plumber for their guidance.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: What can I do about the smell from this open drain?

Hi @Jhur,

I should also mention that I would not advise covering the drainage point as the build-up of gases can cause big problems.

If the drain cleaner does not work, I would suggest you speak with a plumber.
