Should I put a small fence or plants for front yard?

Hi Bunnings workshop,

I would like to ask something about fencing.

We recently acquired a new house and, in the front garage, left side, is the boundary of our neighbors side.

And because its a bit "open", I prefer to have a bit of boundary, if you call it.

My idea is  that  wanted to put a metal grill fence , maybe a meter or less in height. From the garage to the sidewalk.

Maybe in front yard as well, to match the "design".

Do you think a grill metal fence would be ideal ? Or are there  plants i can put there, so i will have a bit of boundary as well.

Im mindful of the budget as well.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Should I put a small fence or plants

Hi @manthepianist,

The first thing to check is whether your local council allows fencing at the front of the property and if there are any height restrictions. Some areas have regulations that limit or prohibit front fences, so it’s best to confirm before making any decisions.

A metal grille fence would provide a clear boundary and could complement the design of your home, but if privacy is a concern, it might not be the best choice.

If you're open to plants, a low hedge or screening shrubs could create a natural boundary while also softening the look of the space. Keep in mind that, since the area is narrow, plants may eventually encroach on the neighbouring property, so it’s worth discussing this with your neighbour before planting.

If you're working with a limited budget, you could also consider a combination of both—a short, affordable fence with some greenery in front of it for added privacy and visual appeal. Something like Murraya or low-growing Lilly Pilly varieties could work well if you prefer plants, while a simple metal or timber picket fence could be a budget-friendly fencing option.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
