New deck
Hi All,
Wanted to share with you our new deck. It's been so nice to be able to enjoy it over summer!
It was built over some old concrete and natural ground. Approx. 60sqm in size.
- Treated pine for bearers and joints
- Belian (Malaysian Hardwood) decking
- Finished with an oil.
Happy to answer any other questions you might have.

Re: New Deck
Very impressive work @DIYgals! Thanks for sharing all the progress photos. It's always so inspiring to see a deck take shape. How did you settle on the type of wood to use?

Re: New Deck
Thanks so much @JaneK . Wanting a hardwood and affordability weighed into our decision making. We were lucky enough to come across a supplier in Adelaide for the Belian. We really loved the colour and when we did a bit of research on the timber we found that its durability in and above ground is excellent, and it is resistant to termites! We did have to purchase a whole sling so we should have plenty to go around the new studio which is currently under construction atm.

Re: New Deck
Amazing work, @DIYgals! I especially like the design you've gone for, the picture framing and the timber choice. That timber has come up beautifully after oiling.
Fantastic job all round; I can't wait to see the new studio!

Re: New Deck
Thanks @MitchellMc we are very happy with the end result. The picture framing was quite difficult to get our head around, lots of little extra bits in the framework to think about. But we got there in the end!

Re: New Deck
It was most definitely worth the extra effort @DIYgals. Nothing says finished deck better than picture framing!
Great job!

Re: New deck
Hello @DIYgals
A most impressive build! The build photos alone should inspire and give confidence to our members that they too can build their own deck.
Cheers,
Red

Re: New Deck
It's looking awesome. You inspire me to go next step
Can you tell me whether we need to go for termite protection as deck must be touching your house structure. If yes how much that would cost?
Thanks

Re: New Deck
Hey @ppp,
I can’t wait to see some photos of your new build.
We have not used any termite protection between the house and the deck. Our house is double brick and have used termite resistant timbers. At a guess, termite protection requirements may vary depending, where you live and what materials are used for your house and deck. A pest specialist might be a good person to have a chat to.

Re: New deck
Awesome job!!! Just wondering how it has held up with the weather now that you have had it for a month. We restained our deck and when it rains it leaves dirty marks and now just seems to look dirty all the time we are a but frustrated as we put so much effort into it.
then 3 coats applied of Cabots Timber deck
All timber was sanded back first
constant dirty look
Dog walks on it and leaves marks
