Need a small gas bottle for Gasmate stove.

Need a small gas bottle for Gasmate stove.

I want to purchase the Gasmate double burner camping stove: the yellow one with the wind-guards. I am finding it confusing to choose the correct gas bottle. I wanted a small bottle - the smallest size - and hoped a Swap and Go bottle would work. But I gather there is a new sort of connector, so I am not sure if a Swap and Go bottle is the right choice? (I went to my local Bunnings today, and there were no Swap and Go bottles on the shelf.)

Thanks for any advice you can offer. It’s been years since I bought camping equipment.

Good Evening @CeciliaL

I can picture the gas stove you are thinking of  Is it this one?

Gasmate 2 Burner Portable Camping Stove

I havnt seen one of the 2kg small bottles you described in the Swap and go cages before. Not that I look all the time

I did find Gasmate Camping LPG Gas Cylinder - 2kg that Ithink you might be after. Depending on where you are hopefully Bunnings will stock it. I know you can put into the Bunnings website your local store and should tell you whereabouts the 2kg bottles are.

As to the different connectors. They may have changed the ruling on whats connected and also the age of the bottle before it needs to be replaced.

Re: Need a small gas bottle for Gasmate stove.

Thank you, Dave, yes, that’s the model I wanted to buy. My local Bunnings had them, but didn’t have Swap and Go bottles in stock. I’m hoping there is a small size that would be 2 or 3 kg and easily portable.

There was a notice displayed with the available bottles, saying purchasers should note that there is a new standard and a different connection on the new bottles, with a black knob instead of whatever colour it was before. If I can be sure that a Swap bottle will fit, I would buy the cooker in Bunnings. I might need an adaptor, perhaps.

Thanks for your advice.

Evening @CeciliaL

I think the swap and go are for ease of switching out on the run and the 2kg bottles are for a specific use more so. I will have to check the connections myself to make sure mine are ok

@MitchellMc , @JacobZ will know more I am sure.

Re: Need a small gas bottle for Gasmate stove.

Hi @CeciliaL,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

You might like to check out the following video for some guidance: New and improved connection valve on SWAP'N'GO gas bottles!

To summarise, the standards for gas bottles changed around 4 years ago to improve usability and safety. The main difference is that the new gas bottles have a shut-off valve that won't allow gas to be expelled without a hose connected. The new gas bottles are backward-compatible; however, the hoses that are now supplied with BBQs and gas cookers are not backward-compatible. This is to encourage purchasers of new BBQs to move over to the safer, newer style gas bottles.

If you are grabbing a new Swap'n'Go gas bottle, then you should grab a newer one with the black valve; it will be compatible.

The Gasmate Camping LPG Gas Cylinders will also be compatible, but be aware that they do not come with gas and will need to be filled at a gas refilling outlet.

Hopefully, this has helped to clarify.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob

Thank you, Dave! Very kind of you to assist.

Re: Need a small gas bottle for Gasmate stove.

Many thanks, JacobZ. You and Dave have been so helpful. The last time I bought one of these yellow camping stoves must be at least 25 years ago! I haven’t used bottled gas in many years, so I’m a bit behind the times with how the bottles are improved.

Cecilia.
