Hello All, I've just joined Workshop and I'm seeking ideas from the community on how I might put a recess in the wall in my veranda to good use.
We've just had our 19yr old gas storage unit taken out and replaced with a continuous flow gas heater on the other side of the house. This is great for us as the old tank was obstructing the main walkway in our veranda, so we now can walk through unimpeded. The plumber has put a galvanised sheet over the recess hole in the wall, which we can paint or decorate to suit, but I'm thinking that the hole where the heater once stood could make a handy cupboard to store things for our outdoor dining area right next to where the heater was.
The recess is 420mm Wide x 1470mm High x 130mmmm Deep.
Has anybody had experience with doing a similar job? Any other ideas on how to put the recess to good use?
I seek your advice on the way forward - Thanks in advance.
Hello @spin35
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your wall recess.
It sounds like you have a great opportunity to make the most of that recess! Given the size, it could work perfectly as an outdoor cupboard or storage space for your dining area. For a simple and effective option, you could install some timber shelves inside the recess to create storage for things like cushions, outdoor tableware, or even your BBQ accessories. If you're planning to keep things neatly contained, a timber or metal door can be added to the front of the recess for a clean, hidden look.
To make the cupboard weather-resistant, you might want to use something durable like marine plywood, as this material is built to withstand outdoor conditions. Another idea is to create a feature space where you could put decorative outdoor items like plants or small statues. This would give a personal touch to your veranda, especially if you choose weatherproof finishes like an exterior paint or a wood oil.
For added styling, I suggest adding a few plants or decorative elements near or inside the recess could really help tie the space into your outdoor theme.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
