Vitex timber, also known as Vitex cofassus, is a hardwood native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. It is highly valued for its durability, stability, and resistance to decay and termites, making it ideal for outdoor applications such as decking and furniture.
It's not recommended to stain Vitex decking a dark colour because it can put more stress on the decking and cause it to heat up. Instead, it's recommended to use a clear or light colour wood oil. However, it does not mean that you can't stain it a dark colour. If you truly prefer a dark stain, I recommend thoroughly sanding the surface to remove roughness or any existing finish. Ensure the wood is clean and free of dust before applying the stain.
Using a wood conditioner beforehand can help achieve an even colour, especially if blotchiness is a concern. Choose a high-quality stain suitable for hardwoods, and apply it carefully with a brush, cloth, or sponge. Once the stain has dried to the desired depth of color, seal the surface with a protective topcoat to enhance durability and longevity. Testing the stain on a small, hidden area is always a good idea to ensure it meets your expectations.
