How to screen under house on concrete stumps?

Hi there,

We have a small house on concrete stumps and would like to screen off under the house.

We did the front of the house about a year ago, and bolted the timber into the stump.

Now we’re at the stage of doing the rest of the house. I’m wondering if drilling into the stumps is still the best option or whether this affects the integrity of the stump. I’ve heard of people using hoop iron wrapped around the stump to attach timber. I’ve added photos of the stumps still to be screened and the screening already completed.

Any ideas and input appreciated!

Thank you.

Re: How to screen under house on concrete stumps?

Hi @BecB,

Thank you for your question about screening under your house.

It is unlikely that drilling into a concrete stump to attach a small anchor will affect its structural integrity, however, it will create an entrance for water that could cause issues over time.

The main issue is that in drilling into the concrete you could open a path for water to get to the steel on the inside of the stump. If it reaches this steel, it can rust and break down, which would over time cause structural issues.

You might be fine if you don't hit the steel, but avoiding drilling into the concrete stumps is probably a good idea.

My suggestion with this in mind is to attach a timber cleat to the outside of the stumps using Liquid Nails. You can then attach your horizontal rails to these cleats and then attach your vertical screening to the rails in the same way you have previously.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: How to screen under house on concrete stumps?

Hi Jacob,

Thank you so much for your advice. We decided in the end to drill into the stumps and have storm sealant to seal any gaps.

I’ve added some photos of

the framing we built and also one completed side. We used Merbau decking to match our front screening and gates.
Thanks again!
