How to restore outdoor timber furniture?

My outdoor furniture is desperate need of some love. In the past it’s had decking oil applied because I had it but I want to get away from the dirt brown colour and either have a weathered grey finish or maybe just paint it.

suggestions for products and methods would be appreciated please.

I’m currently painting old windows and would be ecstatic if I never saw another piece of sandpaper in my life if that can be worked around.

Re: How to restore outdoor timber furniture?

So sorry for the delay in my reply @Christine61.

To restore your outdoor timber furniture, the first step is to strip off the existing decking oil and prep the timber. I recommend using Feast Watson Wood Clean, a product specifically designed to break down old finishes and clean the wood effectively. When using any chemical products, be sure to wear your PPE—safety glasses, a long-sleeved shirt, and chemical-resistant gloves. This will ensure you're protected while working.

Give your furniture a thorough scrub with a stiff brush to remove dirt and oils. You’ll be surprised at how well this process can revive the timber. However, if there are any splinters or rough spots remaining after cleaning, you will need to lightly sand these areas to smooth them out.

Once the timber is clean and smooth, you have a few options for finishing. If you'd like to maintain the natural look of the wood without it turning that typical "dirt brown" colour, consider applying a clear furniture oil, such as Feast Watson Exterior Furniture Oil. This oil will enhance the natural colour of the timber, giving it a subtle, warm tone without the heavy brown shade that pigmented oils can leave behind. It also helps protect the wood from weathering while allowing it to breathe.

If you're after a more weathered or greyed look, there are products available that can give your furniture that sun-bleached, aged appearance. A grey stain will help achieve that classic weathered finish, perfect for a coastal or rustic aesthetic. Alternatively, if you're ready for a complete transformation, you can always paint your furniture in a colour of your choice. Whether you prefer a crisp white, a neutral tone, or something bold, painting can give your outdoor furniture a fresh, modern look that fits your style.

This restoration process will not only rejuvenate the look of your outdoor furniture but also help preserve it for years to come, keeping it looking great despite exposure to the elements. Just remember, taking the time to properly prep the timber and choose the right finish will make all the difference in the longevity and appearance of your furniture.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Mitchell,

thank you for your comprehensive reply which I shall apply to an outdoor garden bench. Meanwhile I decided there’s too much wood in this area so will paint the chairs.
