I’m wanting to remove wooden slats as it has been effected by wood borers I’m wanting to add breeze blocks to the open void. Will I be able to lay them straight onto existing brickwork.
Hello @tulle
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about installing breeze blocks.
Whether you can lay the breeze blocks directly onto the existing brickwork depends on the condition, levelness, and strength of the brick surface. If the brickwork is solid, level, and free of major cracks or damage, you may be able to mortar the breeze blocks directly onto it.
However, breeze blocks are quite porous and heavy, so they need a strong and stable base to prevent shifting or cracking over time. If the existing brickwork is uneven, crumbling, or not level, you’ll likely need to create a solid foundation first. This could involve laying a fresh mortar bed or, in some cases, pouring a thin concrete slab to provide a level and stable surface. If the existing brickwork is part of an external wall or an older structure, it’s also important to check for any movement or settling that could affect the stability of the breeze blocks.
Depending on the height of the installation, reinforcing the structure with steel rods or a concrete footing might be necessary, especially if the breeze blocks will be stacked to a significant height. If in doubt, engaging the services of a builder or structural engineer will provide you with the necessary information to ensure the installation is both safe, secure and long-lasting.
