How to replace flyscreen door?

How to replace flyscreen door?

I installed a Pillar metal framed security door to the outside of my front door and it rusted through in six months as we live 100m away from Angels Beach in East Ballina. I wish to replace it with a timber-framed flyscreen door similar to Corinthian 2060 x 820 x 19mm Screen Door Timber 3Lite Fresco 3  However, that's 20mm too high for my doorframe.

Bunnings workshop suggests building one using 2400 x 19 mm timber. How would one join the sides and bearers together?

Re: How to replace flyscreen door?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Gordon39. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about constructing a screen door.

Timber screen doors are designed to go on the outside of the door jamb frame, so they are 2060 instead of your standard door height of 2040, unlike aluminium screen doors that sit within the door jamb. The Corinthian doors can be trimmed down by 10mm and still be covered under warranty. You could trim them down 20mm, 10mm from the top and bottom, but that would void your warranty as it's outside the manufacturer's specifications.

In order to install the timber screendoor, a timber trim piece would be fixed onto the face of the door jamb and wall to suit the 2060 x 820 door. I've constructed a rendering below to illustrate.

To build a timber screen door yourself, you'd need some solid joints for the corners and braces to prevent the door from twisting. This can be achieved with the use of dowels or biscuit joints or more advanced techniques, including mortise and tenon joints.

If you are familiar with working with timber, then I'd encourage you to give constructing your own door a go. However, if this were my project, I'd be trimming down one of the Corinthian doors and using small corner brace brackets if needed to add rigidity back to the structure.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to replace flyscreen door?

Do the Corinthian doors come complete with hinges, door handles and locks?

Thanks

Re: How to replace flyscreen door?

Hi @Gordon39,

Corinthian doors do not come with those accessories as they are sold separately, allowing for individual customisation. We have a wide range of hinges, door handles and locks to select from. However, timber screen doors wouldn't typically be locked and use a pull handle and ball catch system instead. If you did want to be able to lock the door, I trust our knowledgeable members could come up with a solution.

Please let me know if you have further questions.
