How to repair cracked bricks and mortar?

Hi, I'm new here. Looks like a great place to get home improvement info.

I have bricks here and there around the house that are cracked, including the mortar. Probably due to movement as my place is 33 years old.

I'd like to know the best product to use to fill the cracks and mortar. Do I have to remove old cracked mortar or can I just use a filler in the gaps? What tool do I use to get the filler in the cracks of both bricks and mortar. Thanks 😊

Re: How to repair cracked bricks and mortar?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Heidi1. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing cracks in bricks and mortar.

Provided these are settlement cracks and not an ongoing issue you can perform an aesthetical repair with Selleys 440g No More Gaps Bricks And Mortar Gap Filler. It comes in a variety of colours, so hopefully, you can find a close match. Be advised that this is just to cover up the cracks, and if you suspect this is a current structural issue, then it would be best to enlist the services of a professional to assess whether a more comprehensive repair or stabilisation work is needed.

The filler is applied with a caulking gun, which helps squirt the filler into the cracks. You should be able to caulk the product into the majority of those gaps and then clean up any excess that gets on the surface of the bricks. Removal of any material is likely not needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: How to repair cracked bricks and mortar?

Thanks @MitchellMc . The cracks are from settlement.

The product you mentioned has a colour that matches my brick which is great. However the Selleys 'medium grey' in the same product for the mortar is too dark. A lighter grey would be preferable. Any recommendations for a product that would match closer to my mortar?

Hi @Heidi1,

We also have Mortafil, which has a more extensive range of colours. The Ash Grey would be a closer match.
