How to repaint a concrete fish pond?

How to repaint a concrete fish pond?

I have a large fish pond which is approximately 2 metres x 2 metres and 1 metre at its deepest point.  It was originally painted an orange/red colour and then it must have leaked as there is evidence of cracks being filled with what appears to be a polymer water based product which has then been painted over with black paint.   I have now presssure washed off most of the black paint, some of the sealant and some of the original orange paint.  I want to paint the pond almost any colour other than black.   What should I do now please?

Re: Repainting a concrete fish pond

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Ian47. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about sealing a pond.

Most pond sealers will require you to apply them over a sound surface like bare concrete. In your case, you have degraded coatings on the surface, so the new sealer could be compromised by them. Obviously, it would take a great deal of work to remove the existing coatings, so it's up to you whether to take the risk of applying the new coating over them. There's a reasonable chance that applying over the old coatings will work, but say they start to delaminate from the surface in the future, the new coating will too.

You can try Crommelin 4L Blue Pond Sealer or Crommelin 4L Sandstone Pond Sealer, but as I've mentioned it's designed for use on masonry surfaces.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Repainting a concrete fish pond

Thanks Mitchell.  Sorry about the repeat of my question today but it took a while before I found this page.  I will have a good look at the pond today.   I think that I will most likely be putting the Crommelin4L Blue Pond sealer on the pond.  Really looking forward to getting it done.

Re: Repainting a concrete fish pond

Hello @Ian47

If you happen to have a grinder in your tool arsenal, I suggest having a look at the Flexovit 125mm Multi Purpose Flexi Strip Stripping Disc. It's great for stripping paint and prevents undercutting. The best part of course is that it does not use any chemicals that might contaminate your fishpond. This will give your pond a cleaner finish and greatly reduce the amount of old sealer still attached to your pond wall.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Eric
