Hi. I’ve recently purchased a property and did not realise how much road noise was present until after I had moved in. It’s next to a road and when the balcony door is even slightly cracked the noise is quite significant. The unit is on level 4 and I have quite a large balcony. So my question is, what are some methods of reducing noise as much as possible? I’ve heard of plants and bushes but was wondering if there were any other options.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Ryandenney. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about reducing sound from your balcony.
It’s best to start by speaking with your body corporate to understand what modifications are permissible and whether there are any restrictions on materials or installation times.
Using plants and screening bushes is a great start, as they naturally diffuse sound as it passes through them. Dense, evergreen plants like bamboo or lilly pilly hedges can create a soft barrier that helps break up noise. You could also consider installing screening panels or additional louvres similar to the existing ones on the left side of your image. These can help deflect sound away from your balcony while maintaining airflow and privacy. Here's a helpful guide: How to choose a screening plant.
Another option is outdoor acoustic panels. These panels are specifically designed to absorb and block sound, and they can be installed in areas protected from the weather.
Soft furnishings like outdoor rugs, heavy curtains, or even fabric-covered screens can help absorb sound and reduce echo within your balcony area. If the noise is still an issue inside, sealing any gaps around balcony doors with weather stripping and using thicker window coverings can also help limit sound transmission.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
