Re: How to paint external timber?

Hi @Soowas,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

Is it the timber fascia just below your gutters that you are looking to paint?

If so, I would suggest using a high-quality external paint such as Dulux Weathershield Exterior Paint.

You should start by sanding the timber with 120 Grit Timber Sandpaper to prepare the timber for paint. This can be done by hand, or you could use an orbital sander to speed up the process. Once sanded, clean the timber down with a soft brush or cloth to remove any remaining saw dust.

You should then use painter's tape to mask off the areas that you don't want to paint and drop sheets to protect the ground beneath. Have a look at How to use painter's tape and How To Prep Your Paint Job With Scotch for some guidance.

Once everything is prepared, use a UNi-PRO 100mm Mini Roller Kit to coat the timbers and a Monarch 50mm Cutting In And Framing Brush to get between the boards.

Dulux Weathershield is a self-priming paint, so there is no need for a primer, however you will need to apply 2-3 coats depending on how well each coat covers. Apply the first coat, allow it to fully dry, then apply a second coat. Once this coat has dried, have a good look at the coverage. If you are happy with it, this should be enough, but if there are patches of colour poking through, apply a third coat.

Let me know what you think and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
