How to lay stepping stones using mortar?

but how to get same amount of mortar for different stepping stone?

Now im following the steps in this clip. And I almost reach the mortar laying process. 

Im worried that with different amount of mortar for each stepping stone, all stepping stone wont be at the same level - some higher some lower.

Seems a good idea to use brickline, and the stepping stone can lean against the line.

But if some stepping stone dont get sufficient mortar underneath them, wont they sink a bit after the mortar gets cured?

So the question is how to get same amount of mortar for different stepping stone?

Hi Mitchell,

After some trial and error, we ended up using fast-set concrete for the remaining stepping stones. Is this a better approach compared to mortar?

We forgot to mention that the pathway is sloped. Need something stronger to hold the stone.

So far, the stepping stones seem securely in place and no longer move. Hopefully, they will continue to hold

Perhaps the question we should ask is, if the stone become loose again, should we use liquid nail to adhere the stone to the mortar / concrete base ?👀

The walkway looks fantastic. The mortar should hold the paver firmly, but should it fail then I suggest using Selleys 415g Liquid Nails Landscape Stone Concrete Adhesive.

Im doing a very similar project but have bought Westbuild 20kg General Purpose Dry Mix Concrete https://www.bunnings.com.au/westbuild-20kg-general-purpose-dry-mix-concrete_p0760236

I will be laying 800x400 bluestone pavers as stepping stones. I was going to tamp down my existing sand base (had been under a concrete pad for about 50 years until we had to remove it so its pretty firm already), and then place a couple of shovels of the concrete mix and lay/set the paver on top. 

Is this suitable or should I go and replace it with https://www.bunnings.com.au/westbuild-20kg-sand-and-cement-dry-mix_p0760438

I have 4 pavers to lay here and then another 10 in the front yard.

Mortar is preferred over concrete for bedding pavers because it provides better adhesion, flexibility, and precision. It bonds pavers securely while allowing slight movement to prevent cracking.  While concrete may be used as a base, mortar is the better choice for setting pavers. You could use concrete in a pinch, but I'd recommend swapping it for mortar.

It’s recommended all natural stone pavers should be sealed with a suitable paving sealer on the top, bottom, and sides before installation. Sealing is also recommended after pavers have been laid. Sealing reduces porosity, providing essential protection from the elements and staining
