How to clean or paint stone pavers?

Hi,

Thinking of painting the stone paver as it looks old and dirty (a lot of marks which can’t be cleaned):

PHILIPM_0-1737329272234.png

This is stone paver (https://www.stonecentral.com.au/bluestone-pavers-500x500-sawn.html?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI98...).

It has been sealed once some 16 months ago.

Can I still paint on it?

Thank you.

Hello @PHILIPM

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your stone pavers.

Although it seems that the sealer is not doing a very good job, I can still see it's shiny reflection on the surface of your paver. Did the person who sealed your paver provide a warranty? If they did, then I suggest claiming it and having the floor resealed. It will not be possible to paint the surface of your paver because the sealer is still present on the surface of your paver. Painting it now will not be effective, and it will simply peel off.

The sealer must be stripped off and then you can paint the surface of the paver. I suggest asking the trades person who sealed your floor what type of sealer was used and what chemical can strip it off. Once the sealer has been removed you can then paint the surface of your paver.

I suggest having a quick look at these discussions - How to paint old concrete and pavers? by @lynbunce and What paint to use on outdoor pavers? by @Paul55

Hi @PHILIPM,

Let me also extend a warm welcome to the community.

Just thought I'd add that there is advice you should find helpful in the article How do you clean stone pavers?

Perhaps you'd like to let us know how you currently clean the pavers. We'd be happy to suggest alternative approaches.

Re: How to clean or paint stone pavers?

Thanks EricL. That's what I thought.

It is Crommelin 10L DiamondCoat Water Based Paving And Concrete Sealer

What option do I have if I want to paint it? Because it looks very dirty + old.

Thank you.

Re: How to clean or paint stone pavers?

Hello @PHILIPM

I've just been in contact with the Crommelin technical team, and they suggest using the Crommelin 1L Water Rinsable Surface Cleaner And Sealer Remover. They suggest giving the chemical enough time to activate before rinsing it off. Please note that it can stain painted and rendered surfaces so please be careful. Please remember to wear personal protection such as appropriate clothing, gloves, goggles and a mask. Make sure to test a small section first before you commit the entire area.

For tough stains and portions of the sealer that are quite thick a second application might be necessary. Please make sure to follow all the safety guidelines printed at the back of the can. I propose having a look at the White Knight 4L Medium Grey Ultra Pave Quick Dry Paint. Please note however that if your stone paving has a polished surface on it, it will not be compatible. The Ultra Pave needs to be applied to a porous surface.

I suggest engaging the services of a professional to paint your stone pavers so that finish will come with a warranty.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to clean or paint stone pavers?

Thanks Eric.

The review of this product (Crommelin 1L Water Rinsable Surface Cleaner And Sealer) is really bad

Is there other option for me to remove the sealer? If not, I will give it a try.

Yes, was thinking of using White Knight 4L Medium Grey Ultra Pave Quick Dry Paint. to paint over the stone paver.

Yes, the stone paver is polished with smooth surface, if this is not compatible, what other option I have?

I saw this https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/diy-skills/painting/how-to-paint-floor-tiles?

it says apply the primer first so that colour will adhere to the surface??

I really want to give this a good fresh look. The existing paver surface is looks really dirty and old.

Thank you.

Re: How to clean or paint stone pavers?

Hello @PHILIPM

That was the only official recommendation I received from Crommelin in regards to removing the sealer. Using stronger chemicals such as acetone and hydrochloric acid might permanently damage the surface of the stone and irreversibly discolour it. I therefore don't recommend using them.

Once you've managed to remove the sealer on the surface of your paver, I suggest giving the White Knight 4L Medium Grey Ultra Pave Quick Dry Paint a test on your stone paver. Apply the paint on a small section of your stone paver. Let the paint cure for a day or two and see if you can scratch it off with your nails or screwdriver. If the paint has been absorbed into your paver it should not come off, but if it flakes and scratches off easily then it's not compatible with your paver.

The painting video you saw was for the Dulux Renovation Range which is designed for interior use only. it can't be used outside.

In this situation, I suggest engaging the services of a professional paving restoration specialist. They will have the knowledge, tools and techniques to revive and repolish or seal your stone pavers.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to clean or paint stone pavers?

@PHILIPM,

I note that there was only one review for the product and it was not for the same use as you - the customer wanted to remove pond sealer from concrete blocks, so I'm not sure it is too relevant to you.
