Hi Team Bunnings ,
I'm a first-timer and want to build a pergola in my backyard. I want to do it myself. I have a metal fascia and brick behind it, but I'm not sure where or how to start. I could use some step-by-step guidance. Can you help?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Vinky. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a pergola.
It's important to note that a metal fascia is not a structural member, so you can't build directly off it. Additionally, single brick walls are not designed to take a side load, so connecting a pergola directly to those walls is also not advisable. To proceed, you'll need to remove the fascia and locate the structural timber behind it. This timber will serve as a more suitable anchor point. You should create anchor points that bolt through the brick and into the timber, ensuring that the structural timber supports the load.
We have rafter brackets available that will allow you to connect the pergola to the rafter through the roof sheeting or tiles. Alternatively, you can consider creating standalone posts in front of the wall to support the weight of the pergola. Enlisting the services of an engineer is highly recommended to determine the best mounting points and ensure the structure's safety. Additionally, check with your local council as the pergola might require planning permission if it is of a certain size.
Here's a helpful step-by-step guide: How to build a pergola.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

what are my options through Bunnings
Unfortunately, there are no options to connect a pergola to a metal fascia or brick wall, @Vinky. It's not a building technique that is allowed in the Building Code of Australia. An engineer would be the correct professional to help you design an appropriate fixing method. As mentioned, that would typically be by connecting to structural roof timbers.

Hi again @Vinky.
I might have misinterpreted your question. Perhaps you were looking for free-standing kits through Bunnings? If so, there are a variety of great options to consider that could be installed up against your wall. What surface will they be mounted to?
