How to build a fence using pallets?

Hi, just new to this group and hoping someone can answer my questions about using pallets to build a fence. What material are pallets made from? Could I make an1800mm high fence by deconstructing the pallets and running the boards horizontally? I was planning to build a frame around the boards and using posts set in readymade concrete. Has anyone done this before? Can anyone give advice about whether my plan will work? Thanks for any helpful advice. MarianMade

Re: using pallets.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @marianmade. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a fence.

Pallets are typically made from wood, often softwoods like pine, though hardwoods can also be used. It's important to check the markings on the pallets, as some may be treated with chemicals (like "MB" for methyl bromide which I would steer clear of, instead use unmarked or those marked with "HT" for heat treated), so you’ll want to make sure they are safe, especially if you’re handling them a lot.

As for your plan to build a fence 1800mm high using the pallet boards horizontally, this can definitely work. However, keep in mind that pallet boards are often shorter than standard fence boards (around 900mm), so you may need to overlap or stagger them to achieve a clean, consistent look. Building a frame around the boards and setting posts in readymade concrete is a solid approach. Just ensure that the posts are properly spaced and securely set, as the weight of the pallet boards can make the structure heavy. Overall, your plan seems feasible, but be prepared to invest some time into deconstructing the pallets and ensuring the wood is in good condition.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
