How can i improve crumbling retaining rock wall?

Hi everyone,

I live in a rental and have this rock wall (if you’d like to call it that). Everytime it rains it crumbles more. I’m currently ripping out the plants and will be placing pavers for a sitting area next to the stairs but what can I do to stop the dirt and rocks coming down onto the stones. The rock is quite fragile and breaks easily.  Thank you so much

Re: how can i improve this area

Hello @mariahemk

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your backyard.

In this particular circumstance, I would suggest building a retaining wall with either brick or timber. Due to the open nature of the soil and rocks, I believe that as more rain continues to fall it will erode the face of the that surface even further. The only way to stop and control the erosion is to build a retaining wall. I propose speaking to your landlord or the property manager about this issue as it will continue to degrade as time moves forward. By addressing this issue now you'll be able to preserve the backyard without further erosion.

By preparing a plan and obtaining a quote in advance, you will be presenting a well-thought-out solution to the landlord, eliminating the need for them to invest time and effort in sourcing a tradesperson for the project. I also suggest checking your local council's rules and regulations in regards to building a retaining wall.

Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How To Build Retaining Wall (just to give you an idea of how it is done)

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
