Cracks on boundary wall - How to fix

Hi

My home has a boundary/perimeter wall. A section of it has developed a crack. Unsure how this happened. See below the images showing the crack.

Is there any DIY process on how I can fix it? Or is it recommended that I get it checked by an expert?

Re: Cracks on boundary wall - How to fix

Hi @hisumesh,

You can certainly carry out an aesthetic repair yourself by following this helpful step-by-step guide on How to repair a rendered wall, which will help you smooth over and conceal the crack effectively. This involves cleaning out the crack, applying a suitable render patching compound, and then sanding and painting to blend it with the surrounding wall. A well-done render repair can restore the look of the wall, especially for superficial cracks.

However, it’s essential to keep in mind that if the crack is due to movement in the foundation, known as subsidence, an aesthetic fix won’t address the underlying cause. When walls or foundations settle, they can continue to shift, creating new cracks over time. To ensure the wall has reached a stable position, it’s best to consult a professional. They can assess whether the foundation or soil beneath has settled completely or if ongoing movement is likely, which may mean the wall needs more extensive structural repairs and stabilisation.

Getting a professional assessment first will give you a clearer picture and help you decide whether a D.I.Y. approach is sufficient or if more substantial work is needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
