Collapsible barbeque starter

Collapsible barbeque starter

They're on clearance at Coles - @$4.00 each! Yes! $4.00  😁

They come outta the box like this...

Assembled - you even get a top grill...

It would appear you can sit close to a friend and burn something on a stick?

Use it to heat barbecue beads.

And have a small barbecue - with very small sausages, a big piece of corn and something that looks like chicken?

Re: Collapsible barbeque starter

Well - I had too many beads, too much heat. "Burnt ma Burgers" when I turned away for a minute. I also forgot it's a dirty process with
"bead sand" falling from my makeshift stand.

So last evening I welded up a "tray" from a bed frame, brackets from a tip-store and leftover checker plate.

And I'll try fewer beads....

Hi @Noyade

Thank you very much for the update, I was curious to see if it would keep the heat effectively.

We look forward to the next cooking attempt.

Re: Collapsible barbeque starter

Thanks @EricL

"We look forward to the next cooking attempt."

My wife is in hospital so I'm bacheloring and since she hates spicy food I marinated chicken in every spice sauce I could find.

Firstly the beads - I used less so the firelighters had a slightly more difficult time getting to fully ignite. I used to work at the Port Kembla steel works - every time I fire up these beads the smoke and smell generated, reminds me of the coke ovens.

So, to assist in the ignition, I used a butane weed killer.

The cooking started and it was watched closely this time.

Dieticians would cringe, but I thought I did pretty good for an old man!

Re: Collapsible barbeque starter

It wasn't too bad thanks @MitchellMc , but still not spicy enough for me.

But it went better than the previous burger experience.

Stupid me thought I could toss frozen burgers on thinking they would defrost and cook at the same time.

Where it says "Juicy" - you should read that as 23% fat.

I turned away for a minute and when I looked back  - it appeared as a jet engine afterburner with flames 12" high with charred burgers fueled by dripping fat. 🙁

Not so healthy...Not so healthy...

Re: Collapsible barbeque starter

Good news is there is no heat felt under my homemade tray when alight and it catches the 'sand' nicely to be tossed out the next day.

I appreciate there is no need to cook like this - but I like playing with quirky things. Thanks for watching. 👍

Re: Collapsible barbeque starter

Tonight - Cheeseburgers.

And I used two small cast iron fry pans to assist.

First the onions.

Took that pan away - latent heat keep the onions warm.

With a smaller pan I put a pork pattie (pork, spices, egg and bread crumbs) and 'squished' it to form the pan size.

One the pork had denatured - toss it onto the grill for further cooking.

Melt cheese onto the burger and toast the damper bun.

Construct. Adding onion, pickle, tomato and mustard sauce.

Tonight I counted the heat beads - it took 22 beads to create two cheeseburgers. Coulda made more but it's just me and my wife - now home from hospital.

Cheers!
