Yes these are absolutely fantastic.  Unfortunately making them is extremely dangerous.  To get the patterns you will need anything up to 15000 volts of electricity, and the actual process will create hydrogen (which is extremely flammable.  I won't go into too much detail as there are many interweb sites you can check out.  Search 'woodburning with electricity'.

Yes I checked out some wbsites & does look a bit daunting! love the effect but pretty sure I won't be doing it! Need the equipment too!

I think you need a non RCD power supply too just to add another level of danger.
