How to attach bracket to the wall?

Hello wonderful people who are more tool literate than me. I have a very new to DIY question

I want to attach this bracket to the wall (drilling into metal studs)

I was planning on putting the screw into the drill and drilling (like I did with a other style of bracket), into the wall, but the drill chuck is to bulky.

I feel like there is an obvious answer but I don’t know what to do. If I pre-drill a hole would I be able the tighten the screw using a screwdriver? I’m worried if it’s in metal it might be too difficult? If I did pre-drill what drill bit should I use?

This is the drill and screw I’m using

Re: drill chuck is too bulky for bracket - how do I attach bracket?

Hello @alterily

Thanks for sharing your question about attaching your steel bracket to your steel studs. I suggest using the IRWIN Impact Pro Performance 152mm PH2 Bulk. This will allow you to use your big drill as it will provide enough distance between the bracket and the drill head itself. My best advice is to drill slowly at first to allow the screw head to bite into the steel stud. Please note that your corded drill possibly does not have a stepped speed controller so be aware that it does not over drill the screw into the wall.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thank you so much for your help! I was able to attach the brackets to the wall thankfully!

I have an other question if it’s ok!

When I’ve installed the bracket my shelf does not sit even along all parts of the bracket

there’s a very small gap near the base of the wall, is this a problem? I already had some shims that I could use to make the contact better

Is this necessary? I would like the shelf to be well supported so I could place heavy items on it.

thank you so much for your help, and helping to make DIY more achievable

Re: drill chuck is too bulky for bracket - how do I attach bracket?

Hi @alterily,

I suspect that gap will be minimised when you install the screws through the bracket up into the bottom of the shelf. That will pull the shelf down and make the brackets conform to it better. I suggest using screws that are shorter than the thickness of the bracket and shelf combined.
