can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Hi

I was thinking of making a small side table with this panel. But I only need it half the length. I want to build something like this desk, but half the length and no drawers.

I don’t have any power cutting tools but I have a hand saw. It’s this Bahco saw

Is it possible to cut through such a panel with just a hand saw or will it be too difficult? And if I cut through it, how do I make sure the cut edge is straight? Will I need to sand it straight (I have an orbital sander).

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Hi @Jen_Andrew

Unfortunately, I don't think you'd get a great finish with a handsaw, but if you take your measurement with you, these panels are able to be cut in-store on the panel saw which will give a nice, straight cut.

Cheers

Thanks @twocutekelpies

I didn’t know Bunnings was still doing cutting for customers. At least I couldn’t find it on their website anymore. And when I did see this service previously, the tolerances were something strange and large like 100mm either way.

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

If you speak to the operator, they can tell you how accurate their saw is at that time. They can put the panel in and tell where the blade will actually cut to confirm how accurate your cut will be and should be able to adjust if needed. Try to pick a quiet time so they aren't rushed.

Hi @Jen_Andrew

I agree with @twocutekelpies  - Bahco saws are a fine product, but you will never get the perfect edge - even with sanding.

Any chance we can talk you into purchasing a small electric hand circular saw? That would be another alternative which you can reuse on other future DIY wood projects.

Cheers.

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Hi @Noyade I often think of buying a circular saw but am afraid.  I have no idea how to use a circular saw and have been told horror stories at work about people cutting fingers off with them. And none of my friends or family use them either so I don’t have anyone to learn from. I need my hands for work and my other half is worried about me buying such a tool

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Hi @Jen_Andrew,

It's great to see you've already received some helpful replies. Our team in your local store should be able to cut the panel for you. Just remember that we only cut in 100mm increments, so your measurements would have to align with that. Cutting the panel at 600mm should be fine.

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Fair enough Jen @Jen_Andrew  - just thought I would ask. 👍

I worked in operating theatres 25 years ago and saw some horrific power tool injuries.

All the best with your project.

Cheers.

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

Thanks @MitchellMc   How do you actually get someone in the store (my local is chadstone victoria) to cut a panel for you? Can you book online? Thanks in advance.

Re: can you cut this panel with a hand saw?

As @twocutekelpies mentioned @Jen_Andrew, it's best just to attend the store at a quieter time, and you'll be able to get the panel cut. Weekdays, especially weeknights, are a great time, but we can cut panels at any time of the week. No need to book a time.

If you speak to a team member in the timber yard they'll be more than happy to assist with the cut.
