Are there non toxic paint and varnish strippers at bunnings? Or less toxic? Something like orange peel or citristrip? To remove oild based stain on pine.
Hi @Purplepolkiri,
If you're looking for a less harsh paint and varnish stripper, there are some products available, such as Bondall 500ml Waterbased Paint & Varnish Stripper. It’s a popular option due to its lower toxicity and the fact that it doesn’t emit harsh fumes, making it safer for indoor use. It's also water-based, non-flammable, non-caustic, and methylene chloride-free.
However, it's important to note that strippers like these excel at removing surface coatings like varnish and paint that sit on top of the timber. Penetrative products like oil-based stains, which seep into the timber, can be more troublesome to remove. You may find that stripping alone won’t fully eliminate the stain. In many cases, sanding deep enough to remove the stained timber layer might be necessary to achieve the desired result.
If you do need to sand, make sure you're cautious not to over-sand, as that can damage the timber itself.
If you plan on doing a significant amount of stripping, it would be best to pick up a 3M Large Paint Project Reusable Half Facepiece Respirator. Also, remember to wear safety goggles, rubber gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, trousers, and enclosed footwear. It's always best to work in a well-ventilated area.
