I bought the bedside drawers for an op shop for $20, I already had another bedside drawer unit and a tall boy unit stripped and painted, clear top and satin black lower section, I just added this unit to complete the set.
12mm timber dowel to seal handle holes
Sawdust and glue to patch old handle holes
Wood filler
Paint prep, ESP, easy surface prep
Masking tape
Black satin paint for body and drawers
Clear varnish for top
Timber to re design base.
Brackets, screws.
Gold knobs
125mm diameter sander, 80, 120, 240 grit
Square Finishing sander, 240,400grit
Paint brush
4mm pile roller
Rags
Mitre saw
Remove old drawer knobs.
Remove base legs
Remove top back timber support and patch
Cut pieces of timber dowels to fill old handle holes
Glue in place
Mix up some sawdust and glue to fill area around handle holes
Allow to dry
When all the glue has dried
Sand the drawers around the old handle area, then patch with wood filler
When the fill has dried , lightly sand the shine off the drawers and body of the unit.
Sand the top of the not until all the varnish and stain is removed back to bare wood.
The body and drawers can be coated with ESP product, this product makes paint stick to most surface, follow instructions on the container.
Cut and fit the new base board, I router the length of the base with a radius to match as much as possible the other units, fit in place using brackets as required.j
Sand and paint top with clear varnish
Paint body with satin black paint, no undercoat required, I applied two coats of paint, with paint brush and small 4mm pile roller
Drill and fit new knobs.
Hi @JoeAzza
Thank you for sharing the steps and materials you've used for your upcycled bedside drawer cabinet. The modifications are impressive, the paint job is perfect, and the drawer handles are superb as they provide the perfect contrast to that black satin paint you've put on.
Again, thank you for sharing such a wonderful project.
Eric
Evening @JoeAzza
Now that looks sharp! Def a modern look and quiet stylish.
I had not heard of that product for painted surfaces It looks really interesting.
The draw set really came up nice.
Dave
Thankyou @Dave-1
I use the ESP product for things that are difficult to sand, also I hate sanding before painting, so to reduce sanding time I use the product, I have used it on my colourbond garage roller door colour changed, no sanding at all, also on an external door that was varnished, also not sanded, just applied ESP as per instruction, then two coats of water based paint, I’m not sure if you get the same results with oil based paints.
