Side tables - Old to new

Complete side tableComplete side table

Pre loved side tables were in deperate need of a new look and additional storage.  I removed the old tops and replaced them using 26mm Beech Laminated Panel.  I had enough panel to make both tops and a shelf for books etc with very little wastage.

I added a new storgage drawer with soft close runners and upcycled an old, solid drafting board to create some sentimental drawer fronts, thanks Dad! I picked up an old bolt on the beach from under a bridge in Barwon Heads, Vic and decide it would make the perfect drawer pulls. I cut the bolt in half and tapped a thread to attach.

The sides were clad with Tassie Oak 18 x 6mm flybead for an updated look.

I sanded all sufaces back to raw and coated with a simple whitewash before sealing with a few coats of Cabots CFP floor in satin. I find the CFP floor very hardwearing for busy surfaces.

Finshed tables gave the bedroom a lighter feel and plenty more useful space.

Hope you enjoy the project!

Love the bolt idea! So is it attached with a nut on the other side or you inserted a nut into a draw panel? And also did you put a clear coat
over the bolt?

Re: Side tables - Old to new

Ahh, I drilled and tapped a thread into the centre of the bolt after it was cut to length.  Was worried that the metal would be too hard, but managed to get it done.  Then just a screw from inside the drawer like any other drawer pull 👍

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @rogadesign. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for sharing this amazing project.

What an awesome transformation you've achieved there! I absolutely love the use of bolts as handles; it adds so much charm. The new Beech tops look fab, and that doweling ties everything together nicely.

Many thanks for sharing, and I look forward to your next project.
