How to stain a bedside table to match other furniture?

I am in need of a new bedside table and would like to stick with the colour scheme of my room, currently, all my furniture is a deep brown, I found a side table/bedside table that is perfect, however, it only comes in black, a light oak wood colour or white. Is there a way to paint/stain this material in order to make it match? attached is an image of the table, the material and the current colour of my furniture.

Hi @raytherock

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about matching your side table to the colour scheme of your room.

If you look closely at the fine print, you'll notice that it says particle board with a paper veneer finish. I'm sorry, but this particular material can't be stained as it will not properly absorb stain and varnish products.

The good news is that there is a similar desk available on the Bunnings website called the Costway 2-Tier Bedside Table Wooden w/Drawer, Brown. It's a bit darker but it should blend in with your deep brown furniture set. I also suggest exploring the bedside table category as there is a fair bit to choose from.

My only other suggestion is to consider purchasing an all-timber side table that you can strip and repaint to the dark brown finish of your furniture.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Hey Eric, Thank you so much for this information! I'm assuming since you can't stain this material I can't paint over it correct?

Re: How to stain a bedside table to match other furniture?

Hi @raytherock

I'm sorry but the surface can't be painted with ordinary paint either. What happens is that the surface will start to curl like bacon as the paint chemicals pass through the paper membrane surface. It can technically put up with accidental wetness but long term soaking will destroy it.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.
