How to stain a Pine desk?

I have used pine wood to make study desk and used stain paint but I noticed the surface is very rough. It is not smooth. What am I doing wrong? I want to keep the natural wood color. Any suggestions!!!!!! I have attached the pic he stain I have used.

Hi Mitchell, thank you again for your reply. For retaining the natural look of the pine panel, mMay I know if I should use this Cabot's 250ml Satin Water Based Cabothane Clear Interior Varnish?

That would be fine, Francis (@FXMV) as it's a clear finish. You can choose satin or gloss depending on the sheen you want.
