How to seal timber floors?

Just starting on my Renoing adventure on our old queenslander with my family wanted to know what would be the best seal for our wood flooring we want to keep it matte and about to apply a stain to the wood really want it to be long lasting heard that oil based is more resistant and we live in a wet area any suggestions or tips would be great 👍

Re: Wood Flooring Restoration

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @AmandaDent. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about floor coatings.

When it comes to wood flooring in a wet area, you’re right to focus on durability, and I understand you’re looking for a matte finish. Many hard floor coatings are only available in a satin or gloss, and satin is glossier than matte so it might not give you the subtle, non-reflective look you're after.

I’d recommend using an oil-based product like Cabot’s 1L Cabothane Clear Satin CFP Floor Polyurethane. While it’s technically a satin finish, it’s on the lower end of the sheen scale and provides a much more subtle shine than gloss, allowing you to achieve a more matte look without sacrificing durability. This oil-based polyurethane is highly resistant to moisture and wear, which makes it a great choice for wet areas like yours. I recommend you do a test section to ensure the satin is not too glossy for you.

Be sure to properly prepare your wood floor before applying the stain and finish. A well-prepared surface will help ensure the best possible result and longevity for your floors.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
