How to sand and seal timber floorboards?

Hi Bunnings team,

I'm looking to remove the carpet in the living room then sand and seal the wooden floor underneath.

I've looked at Bunnings video of sanding/sealing timber floor so it's all good but just want to ask about

1. https://www.bunnings.com.au/kincrome-automatic-centre-punch_p6119128 Is this centre punch designed for nail punch? or do I have to buy a different kit.

2. Sanding grit. According to bunnings video the gentleman says 40-60 grit but I'm looking at this sealer product https://www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-1l-gloss-water-based-cfp-floor_p1520273 which says 180-240 grit. Which grit should I go for. From experience with other room, the carpet is not glue to the floor so the boards should be in their original finish.

3. Joint filler - I assume I need to do joint filler if there're significant gaps between the boards? If so, what would the product to buy. I see some guys using sawdust + epoxy but i don't have access to sawdust.

4. recommendation for clear sealer please? https://www.bunnings.com.au/cabot-s-1l-gloss-water-based-cfp-floor_p1520273 is this good?

5. Can I use a paint roller instead of the lambswool applicator for the floor sealer?

I'm not keen on buying something to use only once. With the paint roller I will be able to reuse in wall painting etc.

Sorry no photo as I haven't ripped up the carpet yet

Thank you very much

Re: How to sand and seal timber floorboards?

Hi @Vegemite,

That would not be a suitable punch as it is an automatic action with a sharp tip. It's more suited to marking steel. I'd recommend the Kincrome 2.5mm Nail Punch.

40-60 grit sandpaper would be used to strip the existing coating and surfacing the timber so it is flat. You'd then go over that with a finer grit such as the 180 and then the 240 grit to smooth the surface and prepare it for the Cabot's 1L Gloss Water Based CFP Floor.

We have a range of timber fillers that can be used to fill the larger gaps. They come in a variety of colours, so it's best to select one that matches your timber closely.

Cabot's 1L Gloss Water Based CFP Floor is suitable for your floor. I use it extensively and have found it to be a fantastic product.

The Cabots CFP can be applied with a 6-10mm nap roller, so there are no issues there.

Just so you know, we hire floor sanders which will make quick work of the job.

Remember your PPE, including a face mask, goggles, and gloves.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
