How to replace regular size light bulb with a LED downlight?

Hi everyone,

In our living room we have this quite large downlight which seems to use regular size bulb.

The outer diameter is 185 mm and the inner circle (from inner edge of the rim to the opposite side) is 150 mm.

I'm planning to get an electrician to disconnect them and turn them into sockets in the ceiling and then I'll replace the lights with IC4 LED downlight such as this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-9w-tri-colour-dimmable-led-downlight_p0537649 which is only use 92 mm cutout.

Any idea how to fit the LED downlight into the larger hole without having to replace the ceiling plasterboard?

Thank you!

Re: How to replace regular size light bulb with a LED downlight?

Hi @wellz,

I understand your challenge. It would be ideal if we could find a replacement that is the same size as your cut-out. Let me see if one of our resident Bunnings D.I.Y. experts in @EricL can assist.

If there's no suitable light of the same size, would you consider installing new downlights in different positions? I suspect repairing the existing holes would be easier then...

Hello @wellz

I propose covering your old down light hole with a repair panel and redrilling a new hole for your new down light. The general patching process is to place timber support pieces into the ceiling both glued and screwed to prevent the repair from lifting off. You then plaster the repair and wait for it cure, once it is ready you can then re-drill the new hole. I've placed some sample images below to give you an idea of how it can be done. Please disregard the measurements on the images.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
