How to repair hole in internal door?

Recently purchased a house with this less- than-discrete cover up for what I presume (hope) is some teenage boy testosterone gone wrong.

If anyone has a better repair idea than mine for this it would be appreciated.

My idea is to:

- cut around the area to create an even square

- glue a backing board behind the hole (cut into two so it fits the hole)

- glue a square of board equal to the depth of the door's board onto the backing board

- fill the gap with a flexible filter (maybe no more gaps?)

- sand and paint

Happy to be told I'm going about this all wrong!

Re: Internal door repair

Hello @MrCannotWeld

On the contrary your description of the repair method is very close to how it's done. I suggest having a quick look at this guide - How to repair a hole in an internal door. The only difference between your plan and the guide is that you'll be using a timber square board to accomplish the patch. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your proposed step. This will actually save you from having to put in a large amount of filler in the hole.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: Internal door repair

As an update...

1. Cut out a hole

2. Used liquid nails to add a 4.8mm backing board (in 3 parts so it would slip into the hole)

3. Sanded this so it was level and used liquid nails to add a 3mm MDF board that was about 5mm smaller than the hole on each side, and added a good bead of liquid nails all the way around

4. Sanded it all back to level and used spakfilla on any bits that needed touching up

5. Painted and re-hung

Honestly could not tell that it was ever damaged. Thanks for the assistance.
