How to reduce brightness of Arlec bar light?

Hi,

I recently installed a Arlec 4W 31 cm

Linkable Bar Light on the wall next to my staircase. However, it is quite bright at night, so I'm looking for a solution to reduce the brightness or cover the top of the light. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Re: How to reduce brightness of Arlec bar light?

Hello @Yesh

Thanks for sharing your question about your Arlec 4W 31cm Linkable Bar Light. I suggest downloading the Grid Connect App on your phone and linking the bar light to the app. From there you'll be able to control its colour hue and brightness.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for your reply. However, I believe this light bar does not have an option to connect to the app.

Hi @Yesh,

Please accept my apologies on @EricL's behalf.

You could try putting some tinted window film on the face of the light bar. Also, some Clear Twinwall Polycarbonate Sheet could potentially help diffuse and reduce the brightness.

Allow me to tag @Dave-1, @Noyade and @DIYGnome to see if they have any ideas.

Afternoon @Yesh

Must admit my first thought was to line the inside of the light with some cellophane, not sure if the light is able to be dismantled tho.

So the difuser idea would be next off the rank to try.

I was caught out by the thinking of the app control when I was looking it up as well. The shading it gives for the colour profile made me think it was a sliding bar.

Re: How to reduce brightness of Arlec bar light?

Hi Jacob,
Thank you for the ideas. However, I am a bit concerned about using window tinting film due to potential fire risks. Instead, I am considering using a polycarbonate sheet. Essentially, I need a box that covers the top and two sides, allowing light to shine only from the bottom.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for the ideas. However, I don't think it can be dismantled to use cellophane. Instead, I might try using polycarbonate sheets to cover the light from three sides so it only shines from the bottom.

Mmmmmm you could paint them? They are LED styled lights I think so the heat isnt there to be concerned about? But I would use that as a last option

Re: How to reduce brightness of Arlec bar light?

Hi @Yesh,

As @Dave-1 has said, as they are LED lights, the heat output is minimal, but your concern is definitely understood.

It would be very hard to build a shroud out of a polycarbonate sheet as there isn't a lot of strength to it and attaching it to each other would be difficult without timber to attach to.

You could build a shroud out of 64 x 19mm 2.4m DAR Pine Premium and attach it to the wall so the light will only shine down.

What do you think?

Hello @Yesh

I would suggest contact adhesive sheeting as it can easily be removed without damaging the fixture and would adequately diffuse the light emitted 👍
