can i use chalk paint without sanding varnished pine bookcase?

Most paints don’t adhere well to varnished surfaces, so it’s generally recommended to at least lightly sand the bookcase to remove the glossy sheen. This helps create a better surface for the paint to grip onto. Once sanded, applying a primer will further improve adhesion and help block any potential stains from bleeding through. After that, you can proceed with your chalk paint for a smooth and lasting finish.
