How to paint over vinyl sliding wardrobe doors and powdercoated trims?

IMG_8827.jpegCan I paint my sliding wardrobe doors that feel like vinyl and the trims and tracks maybe are powercoated?

Re: Painting over vinyl sliding wardrobe doors and powdercoated trims.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Lily3. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting over vinyl wrap.

The Dulux Renovation range can be used over vinyl-wrapped panels provided the directions on the can are followed, including the use of the Dulux 1L Renovation Range Primer. For the trims and tracks, you should sand to a dull finish with 240-grit sandpaper and coat with epoxy-enamel spray paint

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks Mitchell.  Are Dulux products the only option?

Re: Painting over vinyl sliding wardrobe doors and powdercoated trims.

The only other similar product I'm aware of @Lily3 is the White Knight Tile And Laminate Paint. However, it's only designed for laminate and melamine surfaces, so if your panels are vinyl-coated, then this product wouldn't be suitable.

Hi Team,

Following from the chat above, how do I figure out what my sliding wardrobe doors are made of? They’ve yellowed over time, and I’d like to refresh them with a paint job, but I’ve no idea where to even start with this (I’m not at all “handy”). Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi @EricaGray,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

If you run a hand over vinyl coverings, they will feel soft and slightly spongy whereas laminate and melamine surfaces will be very slick, often quite glossy and feel much harder than vinyl.

If you could upload some images of the wardrobe doors, I'd be happy to advise what they are likely made of.

Let me know if you need a hand uploading images.

Hi - I have a similar question and have uploaded a photo of my wardrobe doors that I would like to paint. Are these laminate?

Hi @CJM,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

It's extremely difficult to tell from your photo alone but I suspect it is either a laminate veneer or an MDF veneer.

If you could take the door off the roller and take a photo of the top, bottom and sides of the doors, this might help me identify what kind of door it is.

The way they finish the edges of the door is slightly different with MDF and laminate, so this may help to shed some light.

Let me know how you go.
