How to paint MDF side table?

Hi everyone 🙂

I’m thinking of buying these checkered side tables from Kmart but want to paint them black and white.

They’re made out of MDF, so I was just wondering how I’d go about this? What would I need to do to prep them before painting, which paint should I use etc 🙂

Thanks!

Re: Painting Kmart side table

Hi @Ash_,

So sorry for the delay in my reply.

Do you happen to know if the MDF is coated with a laminate? Many items described as MDF or particle board often have a laminate or similar finish over the surface, rather than the raw MDF being exposed. It’s important to confirm this because it affects the preparation process.

If the surface does have a laminate coating, you’ll need to sand it lightly with 240-grit sandpaper to remove any sheen and help the primer adhere. If it’s raw MDF, sanding is still useful to smooth out the surface and remove any imperfections.

Once the surface is prepared, I’d recommend using Dulux PRECISION Maximum Strength Adhesion Primer. This primer is excellent for tricky surfaces like laminate and will create a solid base for your paint. After the primer has dried, you can use Dulux Aquanamel for your black-and-white design. It’s a water-based enamel that gives a durable, smooth finish perfect for furniture.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
