How to install sliding wardrobe doors?

Hi all,

Hoping for some guidance regarding installing sliding wardrobe doors.

My plan is to install double wardrobe sliding doors, to replace existing hinged doors

  • I will be using the Cowdroy Robemaker sliding rail system.
  • I need 2x timber doors that are 2040 x 820 x 35mm each in size (plain doors are fine)
  •  According to the Cowdroy instructions, I need to make two cut outs in the bottom of each door 34mm H x 72mm W x 19mm to install the wheel system.
  • I assume this means that the bottom rail (solid timber part) for each door must be at least 35mm
  • Most of the Hume doors appear to be honeycomb inside with a rail of only 30mm

My questions:

  • Is my assumption correct (that the bottom rail/solid part of door must be 35mm at least)?
  • Can anyone recommend a door that I should use for this purpose?

Re: How to install sliding wardrobe doors?

Hello @david01

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's a pleasure to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about installing sliding wardrobe doors.

I've just been in contact with the Cowdroy technical department and they recommend that when you cut the holes for the roller sheaves to be very precise. The roller wings are actually the ones holding the door, so it's vital that the cut be as straight and square as possible. Hume does offer plain wardrobe doors, but they do have their own set called  Smartrobe

In order to get a straight cut into the door, I suggest using a multitool with a plunge-cutting blade. Please keep in mind to keep the tool level so that you'll not be cutting at an angle.

Let me call on our experienced members @ProjectPete and @diy_hausdesigns for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
