How to install portable AC vent in casement window?

Hi, I live in a rental house and have a tilting casement window in my bedroom. Unfortunately, it’s the only window available.

The casement window tilts open from the bottom and has a fly screen attached.

My question is: how can I install a portable AC vent in this space?

Re: Portable AC vent

Hi @ageorge,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, there is no simple way to install a portable AC vent to a window like this. You're going to have to build something custom to fit the window.

You'll have to start by removing the flyscreen frame and measuring the width of the channel it sits in.

You can use an aluminium channel that is the same width as the channel the flyscreen sat in to create a frame for a sheet product to sit inside.

You can then use a sheet of plywood or acrylic that is the right thickness to sit in the aluminium channel to block the air from outside.

Most portable air conditioners use a plastic plate that can be expanded vertically but not horizontally, so your new frame should be the width of your flyscreen frame minus the width of this plastic plate.

Cut your plywood or acrylic and aluminium to size and glue the channel around all four sides of it with Liquid Nails. Keep in mind you'll need to cut a notch in your frame to accommodate the window winder.

Let me know what you think.

Re: Portable AC vent

Hi @ageorge  just to add to @JacobZ @suggestion, you make up a new fly screen frame narrower than the original screen, narrow enough to allow the ductwork to fit through to the outside, make up the plywood or acrylic sheet with the duct work hole, attach it to the new fly screen, then fit the screen and duct back onto the window, you can still open and shut the window with the duct pipe in place.

Re: How to install portable AC vent in casement window?

Hello @ageorge welcome aboard 👍

I would concur with the previously made suggested options, tilt out casement windows are the worst style for this type of modification, that given there's a commercially made product available that at the very least may inspire your own working solution (the elongated outlet is the key to the design) and

given the window is at ground I would  be concerned about just how far it needed to be open.
