How to install curtain rod to a wall with metal studs?

I'm trying to install curtain rods to a wall that might have metal studs. I'm using the Ryobi 18v One+ hammer drill but I seem to get stuck after a point. I used a stud finder to locate the stud and avoid it but it still wouldn't go past a certain point. What am I doing wrong? Please suggest what I need to do. Thanks.

Re: Installing curtain rod to a wall with metal studs.

Hi @Nuzuma,

Thank you for your question.

Can you upload a photo of where you're trying to install the curtain rod?

What kind of screw are you using and how long is it? Is this the inside of an external wall? What settings have you got the drill on?

If you have metal studs, there is no real need to avoid them. A metal stud is more than capable of supporting curtains. Your best option is likely to use Zenith 8G x 25mm Galvanised Countersunk Head Metal Screws into the available stud, but I'd need to see where you are installing the curtain rod to be sure.

Once you've provided some more details, I'm happy to make further recommendations or offer further advice.

Re: Installing curtain rod to a wall with metal studs.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. Yes it is the inside of an external wall (see photo). I'm not sure what screws to use I was thinking of using these ones I had at home. Please suggest appropriate screws and tools. Thanks

These are all the options I have right now.

Re: Installing curtain rod to a wall with metal studs.

Hi @Nuzuma,

It looks likely that you're hitting brick or concrete based on this.

You can use the RamPlugs with the chipboard screws.

You'll need to use an 8mm masonry bit like this Kango 8mm x 100mm Masonry Drill Bit to drill a pilot hole for the plug. Place a piece of tape 40mm up the masonry bit to act as a depth gauge while drilling your pilot hole to ensure you don't go further into the brick or concrete than necessary.

Tap the RamPlug in place with a hammer and then screw your curtain rod bracket in place.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Installing curtain rod to a wall with metal studs.

Thanks for all the help. I've got this drill bit set. Would any of these work or else I'll buy the drill bit you suggested.

Re: Installing curtain rod to a wall with metal studs.

Hi @Nuzuma,

Unfortunately, none of the drill bits in this set are for masonry.

You might like to have a read of How to choose the right drill bit for the job for some further information on the different types of drill bits and their uses.

Considering your home has masonry that you may want to drill into in the future, it might be worth investing in a Ryobi 10 - Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set which has a variety of sizes that are compatible with your drill including the 8mm masonry bit you'll need.

Let me know what you think.
