How to glue broken marble?

Hi Guys,

What is the best 微信图片_20241223014007.jpg微信图片_20241223014016.jpg to repair the broken marble table top?  Ideally something strong enough so that it doesn't need support underneath.

(It can be in any color as I will restore the surface later)

Thanks

Colin

Re: the best adhesive to glue broken marble?

Hi @colinweiren

Wow  thats a  nasty  break

To  Glue it i would  use super strength araldite

I would  use clear  packing tape  over the glue on top side of the table to give a flatter glue finish. underneath optional.

You will need to sand any  table top glue lumps off with a sander using wet and dry sand paper 1200gt  There may be hollows you  will need to fill with glue and sand again until the table top looks lovely flat and polished the  clear glue  will blend  in and the join will look like a marble natural feature

But I would  recommend if possible structural supports under  and across the crack line if possible

I might be tempted to glue a Ply  board  smaller than the marble cut to shape  and use it to support both halves.

To   Save money I might use super strength builders glue in the bottom half of the crack and  also to  glue support tubes on with and only use araldite in the top 5 mm where it needs to be  clear.  Use  glues at the same time.

Well big  job ahead if you love this table.

But doable.

Re: the best adhesive to glue broken marble?

Hi @colinweiren,

Thank you for your question about how to fix a broken marble slab.

As @Jewelleryrescue has already said, your best bet is an epoxy such as Selleys 200ml Araldite Super Strength Epoxy Glue.

Unfortunately, I am not confident that you would be able to have the crack entirely unsupported with just glue keeping it together. You will need to consider attaching some plywood to the underside of the marble or adding some form of support.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: How to glue broken marble?

Thanks guys @JacobZ @Jewelleryrescue . Very appreciated. I will give Selleys super Araldite a try.

Re: How to glue broken marble?

Hi @colinweiren,

I just wanted to confirm what the others have mentioned and clarify that you'll be supporting the crack structurally and not just relying on the glue. If the stone table has cracked, then the Araldite will not be enough on its own to support the weight, and given the size of the piece, it could cause significant injury when the glue fails. You'll need to support the bottom of the table with plywood or brackets.
