We have recently moved to a beachside area and have some rusted/damaged internal doorframes. The worst one I have uploaded images. We are very aware that living so close to the ocean we need to maintain our property and would like to tackle these jobs ourselves. However, we are wondering whether this job needs a tradie due to the extent of the bottom damage. Grateful if someone could provide us with advice (or links to websites for instructions) on how to tackle this job. If someone recommends a tradie what should we be researching for? Many thanks in advance Jane
Hello @JaneMG
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your rusted door frame.
I was really hoping that it was just surface damage, it would have been easy for you to fix. However, that third and final photo indicates that the rust has gone through the frame. In order to verify that the rust has totally damaged the bottom of the frame, I suggest sanding down that spot to bare metal. If it just happens to be deep seated rust and the steel is still intact with no holes, then it can be repaired.
If the hole is very small like nail heads, it might be possible to patch it up, but if the holes are as large as 10c coins then it will need replacing. I recommend engaging the services of a builder. They will be able to disassemble your door and door frame and replace it with a timber or steel frame. I propose looking for a local trades person as they will probably be familiar with this type of repair.
My best advice is to ask your builder for a reference of the last two repairs they've conducted. In this manner you can double check for yourself if they are skilled enough to repair your door frame.
I also suggest having a quick look at this discussion - How to repair or replace a rusted door frame? by @m_fitzg.
