How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

I would like to add VJ paneling to a single wall (Wall 1). I do not want to continue the paneling around the mating wall (Wall 2). Wall 2 is not 90 degrees to Wall 1. It is more like 115 degrees. So my question is what is the best way to finish the left edge of the paneling so that it mates perfectly with wall 2. Must the edge of the paneling be mitred to the same angle as mating wall? Or are there other options you suggest? Thank you.

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hello @Francois

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about finishing your EasyVJ wall panelling.

I suggest having a quick look at these discussions - How to finish VJ panelling? by @SaadMalik and How to finish edges of a VJ panelled wall? by @Sugar. In regards to your project, I would recommend using a timber moulding to finish the edge of the VJ panel. It will give it a clear definition of where the VJ panel ends, and the wall begins. Your earlier suggestion of cutting the panel is also an excellent idea, but it will require you cut the panel perfectly.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, lease let us know.

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your response. I have already seen those links while doing research, but it does not address my questions. Like I mentioned, my external wall is not a 90degree corner. So a 90degree moulding will not work. Is there any other moulding you can suggest? I prefer something thin and minimalistic.

Thanks

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hello @Francois

I propose looking at the Porta 11 x 9mm 2.4m Rounded Glass Bead Tasmanian Oak as a possible finish for your panel. The edge can be planed down so that it conforms to the angle of the other wall. Another option is to use Porta 8 x 8mm 2.4m Tasmanian Oak Sash Glass Bead, again the edge can be planed to conform to the angle of the other wall.

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Good Evening @Francois

I was going to suggest the timber edged moulding as well. Even to the point of chamforing an edge down to accomodate the angle needed.

However I do know the frustration of trying to get a nice edge on a corner of two walls.

I came across the issue making cornice up for myself. Angles were a pain and I mean a real pain.

For your issue, how about a straight piece of skirting board cut one edge at the angle required so it it is flat in regards to the wall 2? (It would be mounted verticaly so the DAR is butted up to the straight edge and the angled cut is in the same plane as your wall. To get the cut right you could hold the piece on the edge of the DAR wall so it overhangs and then using a pencil run it down where its needed to be cut.

While looking for the timber skirting board I came across this 35 x 4mm 2.4m Square Edged Board Tasmanian Oak Its thin enough to be very similar to the DAR thickness you are installing plus thick enough to cover the edge of the DAR and only 4mm will be showing on wall 2. I dont think you would even have to worry about it sticking out as its only 4mm thickness. (There are different thicknesses available if the DAR is thicker)

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hi @Francois, what you need is equal angle timber trim like this one. Bunnings have a range of this type available in the indoor timber yard. These have a nice rounded edge. If you are after something very fine, but have a more sharp edge would be a 1.4mm equal angle aluminium one.

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Thanks Eric, I will have a look at these options to see if they could work. Cheers

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hello Dave,

Thanks for the detailed information. The VJ paneling is usually 9mm thick. So if I understand your suggestion correctly it would make sense to use a strip that is also around 9mm thick right? Then strip buts up flush with paneling on the right side of strip. And strip is cut flush at same angle as wall 2 on the left side of strip?
Thanks

Re: How to finish single wall VJ paneling?

Hello Nailbag,

I am just wondering how this will work since my wall is not 90 degrees, but the trim is 90 degrees?

Thank you
