How to build a side table?

Hi guys,

I’m trying to make a side table that can hold my vinyl records and also act as my bedside table. The vinyls will be on the bottom shelf and my everyday items will be on the top shelves. These are my expected plans for construction.

I’m trying to figure out what the best and most stable way of putting it all together. I was initially going to just put pocket holes to put it together but I’m worried the structural integrity wont be strong enough. Then I thought about using angled brackets but I’m not too fond of having exposed hardware.

I’m using this for the wood. www.bunnings.com.au/specrite-1800-x-600-x-18mm-golden-teak-acacia-multi-use-panel_p0456515

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Re: Side Table Construction

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @nicolelimos. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a side table.

Tables like this aren't typically constructed for a reason—namely, that all the weight from the shelves above would be concentrated on the one lowest joint.

To improve the stability and prevent collapse, there are several suggestions you can consider. First, instead of just relying on pocket holes, reinforce the joints using dowels and wood glue with screws. This will provide more strength and stability, particularly at the lower joint. You could also add a support brace or another leg at the bottom to distribute the weight more evenly, which will help prevent any sagging or collapse. Additionally, attaching the top shelf to the wall studs using brackets would offset some of the weight and provide extra security.

Another option would be adding a back panel to brace the entire unit, which will also prevent wobbling and can enhance the aesthetic of the design.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
