I have not used hinges and decide to use a air tight fit lid. The base has a thick padding and the lid is lined
I have cut the fingers and joined all four sides. The fingers sit proud just enough for clean up
To finish the box off I am looking to etich the tree of life into the lid and hope to have that finished my the weekend
Job finished I had a few issues with etching, the soft sap wood came away leaving a raised ridges. To fix this i used a bit of jap brown stain to make the black stand out reducing the effect of the raised ridges and rewaxing the lid. After the wax has had time to harden a polish up and should look ok.
Where possible I try to bring out the natural colors of the timbers by using beeswax or a clear poly wipe.

I will tag @r23on for you to ensure he sees your question. I know he likes to work with Australian hardwoods such as Tasmanian oak and Mountain Ash but am sure he will be happy to confirm what he has used here for the jewellery box.

In responce to the question:
The timber I managed to get a hold of was Meranti light red. This time I was a lazy and used a jig. I had planed to set it up on the saw talble using this method below. I still need to make the jig any way. Time was against me so I use another jig (Leight). In hindsight I should have gone down the table saw track. The time taken setting up the fingers for spacing cutter selection tapping the timber to stop splintering/tearout and sample cuts took longer than the saw table. As a point of intrest I used a spiral upcuter to help reduct tearout/splintering I hope this is helpful.
