Hi, my wall mirror aprox 15kg), has come with an area to hook built in (iron) on either side of the mirror about a quarter way down from the top.

unfortunately my studs don’t line up with where I want the mirror.

- do I nail a baton / wood onto the studs and hang that way?

pic with hook holes isnt mine - but is the same so what screws do I actually use? Is there a specific one you can show me?

thanks heaps

Re: 15kg wall mirror

Hi @Portia

You are right on the money re your own solution the strongest way is to put a batten say 50x 25mm Spanning across two wall studs and your mirror will never move with two 30mm wood screws into the  batton aligned with the mirror metal bracket holes.

Use screws into the wall stud 50mm to 60mm so it reaches all the way through the gyprock and batten thickness. Pre drill the screw holes into the batten, if possible, to stop the timber spliting.as the screw goes through.

The Batton doesn't have to be equally spaced across the studs.  One end can extend out more one side so you can have the mirror positioned more to your room aesthetics.  If you go further than that to batten will show from under one side of the mirror so just paint it white.  Or get crafty and have the batten longer one side and put a couple of hooks on it for clothes or a picture frame it you wish as a guide.

Go crazy and have the batten sticking out both sides use it to add any wall hanging you want.

The  mirror screws  are  every day wood or chipboard screws 30 to 40mm long is  plenty  just have the heads sticking out enough to safely engage and hold the mirror frame.

Tip  Paint the batton  before you add it to the wall it is a lot easier cleaner job.

Re: 15kg wall mirror

Hi @Portia,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

As @Jewelleryrescue has said, your best option is to attach a piece of timber that spans at least two studs and then attach the mirror to it.

You can use 40mm Countersunk Head Timber Screws to attach a piece of 64 x 19mm 1.2m DAR Pine to the studs. You'll want to attach the timber to a minimum of 2 studs.

You can locate the studs using a stud finder. Check out How to use a stud finder for some guidance.

You can then use the same 40mm screws into the timber cleat to hang the mirror from.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
