How to loosen handle on disc tap?

I have what they call a disc tap on my kitchen sink. When I lift the handle to get water running, it is very tight & hard to regulate the flow.

Re: how to loosen handle on disc tap

Hello @Streddsie

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your sink mixer.

There are two possible causes for your sink mixer to be hard to control. The brass locking nut has been overtightened and is compressing the inner workings of the ceramic cartridge. The cartridge has been compromised, and the discs are no longer perfectly smooth as contaminants have come between the flat surface of the ceramic.

If you wish to try and repair the sink mixer, you'll need to take the handle off along with the cover cap. Please make sure that your mains water is turned off to prevent accidental flooding. The brass locking nut will then need to be loosened up with a shifter. But not so loose that water begins to leak from the top of the mixer. Place the handle back on to test if the ceramic disk has become easier to control. If it is still hard and difficult, I suggest changing the ceramic disc to a new one.

My best advice is to bring the old ceramic cartridge with you to make sure you are getting the same size and shape as your old one. If you've not done any plumbing before, I suggest engaging the services of licensed plumber to replace your ceramic cartridge.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
